Tras una oferta competitiva en 2018, Nueva Zelanda ganó el derecho a convertirse en país anfitrión internacional para el cuatrienal IWG 2018 - 2022.
La candidatura fue dirigida por la agencia líder de investigación y defensa de Nueva Zelanda para la equidad de género en el deporte y la recreación, Mujeres en el deporte Aotearoa Nueva Zelanda, en asociación con la agencia gubernamental de deportes y recreación activa Sport New Zealand; más el Ministerio de Empresa, Innovación y Empleo (MBIE); el Ministerio de la Mujer; Turismo, eventos y desarrollo económico de Auckland (ATEED); Turismo Nueva Zelanda; y el Comité Olímpico de Nueva Zelanda (NZOC).
En septiembre de 2018, una delegación de IWG Botswana visitó Auckland, Nueva Zelanda, para entregar las riendas a Women in Sport Aotearoa New Zealand.
