The past few weeks have certainly been challenging for the sport and physical activity sector worldwide, as the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt. The IWG is focussed on influencing global recovery and rebuild post-pandemic, to make sure that women and girls are not left by the wayside, lacking in resource and support. We all need to work together to prevent a generational loss in the momentum we have achieved in the past few years. I want to thank you and wish you the best in your continued efforts.
COVID-19 RECOVERY & ADVOCACY
The IWG is advocating globally for women and girls in sport and physical activity in the face of COVID-19:
Global ‘Call to Action’
In mid-April 2020, the IWG Gobal Executive launched a ‘Call to Action’, encouraging the nearly 600 Signatories to the Brighton plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women & Sport to lead the world by example. Signatories are urged to leverage their skills, resources and networks to contribute relevant responses to support the wellbeing of their female membership and diverse communities in the context of COVID-19 recovery and rebuild.

Global Media Advocacy
Over the past few weeks, the IWG New Zealand Secretariat has been sharing insights and observations with world media, as COVID-19 began to make its impact felt on women’s sport, now evidenced by the slow return at elite and grassroots levels. From interviews with Al Jazeera International to opinions in The New York Times and on LockerRoom, efforts to positively impact decision-making around women’s sport during recovery continue.

Global Leadership Insights
In early April 2020, the IWG New Zealand Secretariat launched its new ‘Leadership from Lockdown’ video series, in partnership with Trans-Tasman Business Circle SportsConnect. Over ten weeks, the IWG has connected audiences with leaders facing COVID-19 challenges globally, enabling them to ask live questions and seek advice. Speakers featured have included FIFA, World Rugby, NZ Olympic Committee and the Victorian State Government Australia.

‘Leadership from Lockdown’ Video Series
Pre-registrations are now open online for this week’s speaker: Oliver Dudfield, Head of Sport for Development & Peace, Commonwealth Secretariat. Oliver will join us at 08.30 NZT on Friday 5 June 2020 (21.30 GMT 4 June 2020) to explain what the Secretariat is seeing around the world, how its strategy is evolving in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it plans to work with member nations to recover and rebuild sporting systems.

IWG Annual General Meeting 2020
All 13 members of the IWG Global Executive will gather to attend the IWG AGM on Tuesday 9 June 2020, held digitally this year due to COVID-19. The main agenda points include reports on gender equity work globally from all Regional Representatives (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania) along with NGO and Co-Opted Members. IWG New Zealand will also present its most up-to-date planning for the IWG World Conference 2022.

Co-Chair of IWG Secretariat receives honour
Professor Sarah Leberman, co-chair and co-founder Women in Sport Aotearoa, delivery agency for the IWG Secretariat & World Conference 2018 – 2022, was this week made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her services to women, sport and tertiary education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Sarah was “honoured and surprised to receive it, but the recognition was not just for her, but everyone who helped her.”

Tribute to Annabel Pennefather
It was with great sadness that the IWG Global Executive learned of Annabel Pennefather’s passing on 27 April 2020, aged 71. Former IWG Co-Chairs Sue Neill and Anita White both paid tribute to Annabel, saying: “There were very few women in leadership roles in Asian sport in Annabel’s time – she was one of the first. Without doubt she was one of the leading lights of the Women and Sport movement, and will be sorely missed.”

Former IWG Secretary General wins major award
Secretary General of the National Council of Women of Finland, Terhi Heinilä, has been recognised for her significant contribution to promoting gender equality in sport by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture. Terhi has been an active role model for gender equity in sports for decades. She served as Secretary General for IWG from 2010 – 2014, and was previously Director of International Relations for the Finnish Sports Federation to 2012.
