NEWS: IWG Welcomes The Camogie Association to Brighton

In one of her final acts as President Uachtarán, Kathleen Woods signs Brighton plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women and Sport on behalf of the Camogie Association. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the signature was completed remotely with a virtual event to commemorate the agreement officially.  

Kathleen Woods passed over the presidential badge at Congress in April but leaves the Association with a lasting commitment to providing gender equality for women and sport.

Speaking about the signed agreement, Uachtarán Kathleen Woods said:   “On behalf of the Camogie Association, I am delighted that we have signed up to endorse the aims of the Brighton Plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women and Sport.  

“This declaration aims to promote, endorse and improve the quality of every aspect associated with female involvement in sport and as an Association, it is something we also strive for. 

We have seen a massive improvement in recent years, but we know that there is still a long way to go. By signing this agreement, we are showing our support to our members that we will continue to endorse the aims and ethos of both our Association and the declaration we have committed to. 

We would like to thank the International Women’s Group on Women in Sport for their assistance with signing this agreement, and we look forward to their support in the future.” 

IWG Secretary General, Rachel Froggatt said: 

“The Brighton Declaration continues to provide a roadmap toward gender equality in sport and physical activity globally.  The IWG is delighted to welcome the Camogie Association into a signatory group that now features nearly 600 organisations worldwide.”

Camogie is an Irish stick-and-ball team sport played worldwide, largely among Irish communities.
