Women in Sport Aotearoa (WISPA), delivery agent for the IWG Secretariat & Conference 2018 – 2022, is delighted to announce the appointment of Shanee Kiriau to the full-time, newly created position of Digital & Community Coordinator, starting 1 March 2021.

In this role, Shanee will coordinate all aspects of WISPA’s digital activity and will be putting systems in place to support a very active online and offline community all around Aotearoa New Zealand.

Shanee will also be responsible for key digital and community strategies and projects planned as part of WISPA’s delivery of the International Working Group (IWG) on Women & Sport Secretariat and World Conference 2018 – 2022. This will include a leading role in ongoing work to launch a local and global Insight Hub; a digital platform that will become the home of the world’s best insights, case studies and news to support the achievement of gender equality in sport and physical activity. She will also play a pivotal role in the digital delivery of the 8th IWG World Conference on Women & Sport in May 2022, which will be available as a physical-digital hybrid for the first time in its history.

Shanee Kiriau first joined WISPA in July 2020 on a 600-hour placement through AUT University, a pre-requisite to finish her Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Sport and Recreation double degree.

During her internship, she impressed the WISPA team and its key strategic partners to such an extent, that she was offered part-time employment from the end of her internship through to the end of her degree. During her time with WISPA, she played a lead role in the delivery of the Sport NZ Women & Girls Summit 2020 in partnership with the Shift Foundation, which was delivered as a physical-digital hybrid for the first time due to COVID-19. It attracted over 1,000 registrations.

Shanee returned to tertiary education in 2017, following several years in the workforce, including four years as Bookings & Membership Coordinator with the Wellington City Council. She worked part-time in parallel to her studies, as an AUT Project Researcher and AUT Marketing Teaching Assistant.

Adding to her already busy schedule, Shanee is a passionate basketball player and coach, supporting young female players and competitions all over the Auckland region. In 2020, she was invited to commentate live as part of the 18in18 Sal’s women’s national basketball league, going on to become somewhat of a local media personality!

Rachel Froggatt, Chief Executive of Women in Sport Aotearoa and Secretary General of the International Working Group (IWG) on Women & Sport said:

“Shanee has been an asset to our team since the moment she first joined us. I am delighted that we have been able to bring her on into a newly created role that fits her skill set and interests so well.

The next few years will be very busy and exciting, particularly as we prepare for the 8th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport next May. This role will provide Shanee with plenty of room to grow, and I really look forward to seeing her continue to thrive as an emerging leader in sport.”

Shanee Kiriau, Digital & Community Coordinator, said:

“I am super grateful and excited to have this rich opportunity to work within a global community of action. Women in Sport Aotearoa has enabled me to exercise my creativity and innovation within the digital realm as a positive catalyst for change in sport! I look forward to growing and learning in this amazing environment amongst the wealth of leaders in preparation to the 8th IWG World Conference on Women & Sport in May 2022.”
